In Reply To: In your opinion, how do HR consulting firms rank against each other, in terms of brand name, reputation, quality of working environment and work/life balance ? I'm interested in a comparison between the usual ones (Hewitt Associates, Towers Perrin, William M. Mercer, Watson Wyatt Worldwide, Hay Group) but also between these and the Big5. Ideally, I'd like to hear from you guys based in Europe. The situation over there can possibly be quite different from the one in the US, so don't hesitate. Thanks for your input.
Message: I worked for 3 of them over my career - Hewitt, Mercer and Towers Perrin. Each has a distinct brand in the marketplace however. Your personality should match up with the company's brand in order for you to be satisfied. Some people fit better at each of them - I figured out where I fit best, but they have many similarities - same industry breeds this of course. Hewitt is known for "fitting in their box". Towers Perrin is more flexible. Mercer is more entrepreneurial (sp?). They all do well in providing some professional development. Work/life balance is worst at Hewitt - workaholics prevail. Take all of this with a grain of salt - one person's experience and some of it old - as in from the late 1980's.
