I'm wondering if there will be any hiring by the top consulting firms this year or if because of the economy I'm going to miss my chance to get into consulting. I'll finish my MBA in about 4 months, luckily I am working full time at one of those "great first job" companies you mentioned. I'm trying to figure out how to get my foot in the door as well since I'm at a second-tier B-school. Any thoughts on how to distinguish myself from the multitudes of other applicants? Or should I just stay tight and be thankful I have a job? |

All the big firms -- even ATK and BAH, who went through massive hemorhagging (sp?) last year -- are hiring this year. It won't be like 1999, but it's a good sign that hiring has resumed.
McKinsey just announced more layoffs (see the WSJ, 2/19/02), suggesting the end is not so near.
Consulting firms always need first-years to do the grunt work, like the numerical analysis, photocopying, and all the stuff they tell you you won't be doing.
