The pay will be less and the work experience might be a whole lot less, but if that's what you want, then go for it and make the best of it. Concerning your major and GPA, it might hurt a little that you aren't graduating from the business school. I went to a Big Ten business school for undergrad and I know that one of the major reasons I got my consulting position was because of its national reputation. Of course, I was applying to only New York City firms. I guess if you are looking for a job in Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, or Indy, the brand name of U of I would stick out. As for your GPA, you should definitely make it a point to inform potential employers on how you boosted your GPA after freshman year. Tell them the story - it will show that despite 18 year old indiscretions, you bounced back and succeeded. Finally, if you want to find some cool government jobs, just check the departments web sites. The Department of Commerce (www.doc.gov) has a long list of interesting jobs available, ranging from reasearch analyst to economist. The pay is certainly not great, but the hours are decent and many times you get a ton of responsibility, which makes for great work experience. Hope that helps.
Message: I appreciate your responses. Thank you very much. I looked on the DOC's website...very interesting. You mentioned they don't pay much - do you have any idea how much that might be? And where would I have to go to work? What city? And do you know what, exactly, I would be in charge of doing? Most of them actually sound fun. Thanks again for your help! Brad
