If firms use credit hostory at all, it is usually in a post-interview situation, often post-offer ("passing" is a stated condition of the offer.)
So, at least with the firms I know of, it would not be a factor in pre-screening you out.
Usually, you will know when a credit check is being undertaken, as most firms will ask you to sign a waiver / authorization ... so, unless you've been asked to do so, it probably has not been an issue for you so far.

Also, can't you ask the credit reporting agencies to incorporate your comments when there is an inaccuracy / questionable line item?

1) Right, they can't check your credit without your permission, and the only thing that could seriously hurt you is maybe a bankruptcy or something really serious like that. Checking credit is a very expensive way to screen candidates, and I've never heard of it being done.
2) There is room for a "consumer statement" on your credit report (I have one on mine), but I think it might be only if you're a fraud victim or something (that's why I have mine).
3) If a company does insist on checking your credit, explain to the HR person what happened and show evidence you did indeed pay the debt if they seem really concerned. You'll be fine.
