I am currently a freshman at Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. I am majoring in Finance, and am currently interested in pursuing a career in Consulting or I-Banking. I am trying to work on a job for this coming summer, and would like to do something within my major. The problem, I have not had the education yet to participate in a formal internship. So, I am just planning on cold-calling some firms in Columbus (Accenture, Andersen, Bank One, etc) to see if there is anything that I could do for them. I am just curious as to whether anyone has any ideas of what I might say I could do for the firm, since I am fairly useless right now other than that I am highly motivated. Thanks. |

The economy is not doing well, and most firms take undergraduates in their penultimate year(junior for most), so your chances are not looking very good. Consider applying though(although most firms will require atleast three years of ugrad study), and see what happens. Also ask about fall internships - you'll take a semester off, but it'll probably be worth it. Don't sell the "fairly useless but motivated" visage either - I see what you're trying to do, and it's very 'freshman'. Be more positive when selling yourself. Again, it's hard to highlight positives when you're only a freshman - all in all, it's too early.
