you can get internships more easier if you have 'connections'. If you do OK there - jobs are easier to get.
to get a job straight you have to have really big connections (like being the son of the finance minister of an asian country or something).
that being said - most people i hav met with 'connections' were smart enough to begin with. they are not incompetent.

Um, I know very few people in top MC firms whose parents are finance minsters or anything that's a "connection" like that. True, most graduated with honors from Ivy League schools or from other top universities. My experience on both sides of the interview table is that getting an MC job is something of a craps shoot. Having connections helps, and it's almost essential for people who aren't coming directly out of school, but it's not not necessary for peoople being hired directly from "core" recruiting schools.
