In Reply To: Hello, I just wanted to see if there was anyone else out there like me. I am a 24 year old person, laid off once from an IT firm. I ended up with a better company, but now there are rumors of the same thing happening again. I was always a top student, went to a good school, and did everything right. However, with all the stress and stuff, I feel like I'm 24 going on 45. I look at people who are in college, and they look so much younger than me. (I was only in college a few years ago, for God's sake!) Its amazing what I have gone thru in the working world at my age. I think it is unique for our generation for us to face so much stress so soon. In past recessions, it seemed like it was the old people who got screwed. Now, I have heard of many friends, acquaintences who have been laid off, or face a lay off. Is there anyone out there who feels like this, or has a similar story?
Message: I am 23 yrs old, was in the same situation and managed to pull myself out. During the last months I have been working very hard and achieved great results, but found out that there was no future for my role. I was totally burnt out! I managed to get myself out by stepping back and looking at myself and developing an action plan. Now, I have plenty of interviews lined up. Here is my advice: 1)Yes, you are young and you are bright! Irrespective of the economic situation, companies are always on the lookout for young future potential. -Make an self analysis: a) what have I achieved in life. b) what are my skills c) what drives me and what do I want to achieve d) Identify the companies you want to work for and write them speculative applications. Plan a completion date for each letter. (I managed to get an interview with a top 5 consultancy that, according to their website, did not have any position available) e) If you are hired, do not try to change the world. Think about yourself and how you want to develop during the coming years. To "score" with your employer, take on challenges nobody else wants to take on. Do not work hard all the time, but only at the right moment. The "performance peaks" will be noticed by your employer! I hope this will help! In short: a) organise! (effectiveness, not time consumption) b) drive and ambitions! c) self confidence! Good luck!
