In Reply To: Hello, I just wanted to see if there was anyone else out there like me. I am a 24 year old person, laid off once from an IT firm. I ended up with a better company, but now there are rumors of the same thing happening again. I was always a top student, went to a good school, and did everything right. However, with all the stress and stuff, I feel like I'm 24 going on 45. I look at people who are in college, and they look so much younger than me. (I was only in college a few years ago, for God's sake!) Its amazing what I have gone thru in the working world at my age. I think it is unique for our generation for us to face so much stress so soon. In past recessions, it seemed like it was the old people who got screwed. Now, I have heard of many friends, acquaintences who have been laid off, or face a lay off. Is there anyone out there who feels like this, or has a similar story?
Message: Ten+ years ago I was 25 and found myself laid off, fortunately for the only time of my career. I became unemployed and eventually packed all my belongings, took a few months savings, and moved to another city IN THE HOPE of finding a better job. Luckily I found one (then another). This all happened before the big economy boom that we just experienced. I can tell you that that recession started from a lower point than we are now, and I was not in an expanding industry like IT. Even with extreme diligence on my part, I found myself unemployed for 1 year. Such happenings are obviously very stressful for people of ANY age. But because of that dreadful experience I learned to ALWAYS think of my next job, career, or move. This forward thinking in turn has led to a prosperous career. Yet, because of it, I now even find myself in grad school at the age of 36, and about to change fields. My advice is to learn from your experience, no matter how bad is has become, plan, and sharpen your skills EVERY SINGLE DAY from this day forward. Good luck.
