In Reply To: I am a PhD candidate in the hard science with minimal business background. (I worked with a startup as part of the requirement for a hand-onclass I took at Sloan.) I'm interested in a strategy consulting career, but have heard that consulting firms are interviewing APDs only as a matter of courtesy. :-( Should I even bother applying as an associate? How significantly will I improve my chance if I apply as an analyst?
Message: Strategy, no. No chance. Not worth investing your time, unless you can get some sort of very direct hook-up from one of your profs. All "management" and "business" consulting will be out this year. However, the government sides of some firms are hiring. Booz-Allen's "technology" pracrtice serve mostly govt / military, and seems to be hiring. However, do not go there as a "back door" to BAH's commercial practice. There is little linkage or osmosis between the two. But, the tech practive will get you into "consulting" generally in a very rough year. Other speciality firms like Mitre, govt labs like Sandia, and orgs like RAND may also be in hiring mode for obvious reasons. Some of the work done at such orgs is "consulting" in nature, and in the case of Rand, is *really* strategic ... and might position you well for management consulting a few years down the road.
