Thanks for a good thoughtout post. Can someone describe what exactly e-commerce etails. What do e-commerce consultants do? What kind of projects are there? I can't decide to make a switch without knowing if I'm going to like it.
I've heard comments that e-commerce is like SAP - a hot thing for 10 years or so, a fad, not something to build a lifetime career on. I disagree, but would like to hear opinions.

We've been carrying this thread for a while and on many occasions we've arrived at the conclusion that e-commerce projects are no different than other technology implementation projects... with the exception of a heavy emphasis on how the companies' expect their new e-business to face their trading partners or customers, in both b2c abd b2b scenarios. I've maintained that most of the big 5 work is integration and development work... the big strat houses are pushing a document to outline the strategy and possibly manage through the implementation of the business (not technology implementation).
The good jobs are really had going in house with a company wherein you will be working on their e-biz initiatives...
You make the claim that in 10 years e-comm will die off like SAP.... isn't that part of managment consulting on the whole... the field has to adapt to to suit the timely and relevant problems of management and those problems constatnly evolve. Then think about technology... it constantly changes so chaining yourself to a specific technology is a death sentence. However, project management skills for tchnology projects are relevant across most technologies and easily adapted across various technologies.... so if you don't stay in the trenches cutting code forever and you move up the food chain you will maintain a skill set that never loses its relevance.
