I met someone this summer who is going to Duke/Fuqua b-school. Prior to school, he was a recruiter as well.
In terms of b-school, your grades will be helped by your GMAT. From what I can see, I'm at Univ of Michigan now, the people that make it into b-schools are definitely not only ex-bankers and consultants. In fact, depending on the school (like Michigan, and possibly Kellogg and Duke, which are all programs with strong strategy consulting recruiting), they may be in the minority.

I'm a manager at a well known strategy firm, and know many business analysts who're applying for top B schools right now. One of their major issues is how to differentiate themselves from the scores of other consultants who want/need to go to a good B school. So don't worry about your working experience - do your essays well and get good GMAT scores.
And if all these posts still leave you less than confident, go down your original path. You won't be too old to be a fresh Associate at 31/32. I was older as I came into this business after a PhD and industry experience.
