In Reply To: Is there any difference in perception with consulting recruiters between a Part Time MBA working full time vs. Full Time MBA. I am a Part Time MBA in Finance working for a large public company finishing this summer and I am concerned about competing against Full Time students for consulting jobs. Any feedback or ideas. Thanks !!
Message: If you're graduating in June and are starting to look now you're too late for normal campus recruiting. I am a "PT" MBA but I think that term is too generally applied across differing programs. Likewise, recruiter perception will vary depending on your school, the structure of the PT program, whether you're going thru your career center (which some PT MBAs aren't allowed), etc. The most important thing I learned is to present yourself as a fit for what they're looking for. Biggest mistake for PT'ers is they tout their lengthier career experience (at the expense of full-time classmates) when firms are looking for logical problem solving rather than experience. It is human nature to get better at what you do by relying on experience. This is often the opposite of what consulting firms look for. They want folks who can perform well in areas they are not experience in using raw problem-solving skill. Sometimes, experience is inversely correlated to this. If you want some more help, post an email where I can reach you and we'll talk. I have rec'd offers from strategy & Big-5 firms and can share some stories. Good luck.
