This all depends on who you are interviewing with. A midsized strategy firm can be anything from MMG to a local company. Yes, most firms prefer to see a transcript right away but if you seem very promising and there sin't much time, they'll ask you to bring it with you.
Your grades matter. If they didn't, you would not be asked to bring a transcript! It's not how bad your grades are but how you handle it in an interview that will kill you. Don't grovel, drone on, stammer away. Have clear, consice answer that shows you have maturity, responsibility for your own actions and something that redeems you. Feel free to tell them that you understand how your grades may make them question your itnelligence, maturity, drive and sense of responsibility. Then point out other pieces of evidence of that. be prepared for tough questions but don't get frazzled. The main thing is to maintain an air of professionalism and confidence (not arrogance).
Let us know how it goes. We've all spent so much time talking that I wouldn't mind hearing if the grades do matter in the end.
Good luck.
