fully agree: prepare the GMAT, get a good score, spend serious time on your applications and you will get into a top 10 b-school.
Now my personal recommendation is to target one of YOUR top 5 schools, even if it takes you another year to get in. The more experience you have before, the more you will enjoy your MBA, especially if you have a specific affinity with the place, the location, the people |

I don't think your work experience should be an issue in getting into top 20 MBA. As long as you excelled at what you did, and your letters and essays demonstrate that, then you are set. If anything it will somewhat differentiate youo from the drones of consultants and Ibankers applying each year.
