Message: it's a polite way of saying that consulting is an old boys club... now an old boys and girls club. a lot of hiring decisions are made based on the personal recommendation of somebody at the firm who would like to bring a friend on board. many consulting firms even offer bonuses and free vacations for refering experienced prospective hires to the company (if they accept the offer, of course). when i was an undergrad, i got one offer in large part because a friend of mine had a relative at a firm I liked. when i was trying for a job at a top bulge-bracket bank i saw a former columnist for the school newspaper who was now working for the company. i remembered one of his columns (he was flattered) and we began talking about it. I became "his recruit" and he made sure to pull strings for me. it sounds really sleazy and undemocratic, but it's how the "schmoozing" game is played. the sick truth is that the easiest way to get a job in management consulting is to know a management consultant...
