In Reply To: As a recent undergraduate and current employee at Andersen Consulting, is the fallacy that all employees leave after 2 years for greener pastures true. If true, could some people describe some of their current positions and at which companies. For example, do people leave for Cisco, Microsoft, or other BIG 5 firms? Rodney
Message: Most do leave after 2-3 years as that's the minimum experience needed for the CPA license. I spent 7 years and enjoyed the job more each year - as responsibilities and independence increases greatly. I'm also thrilled with the career my 7 years allowed me to land. If your unsure of what you want in your future, then I would say spend at least 3-4 years. At a minimum get the CPA and Senior jobs for at least a year. And if you don't have it, also get your MBA. It's easier to get an MBA outside of public accounting, as hours tend to be more predictable and evenings and weekends are free. Spending 3-4 years in public accounting is beneficial as you'll work on a variety of clients, it provides you with insight into many different industries and provides high level business contacts you will use for life. Be sure to make those contacts (inside and outside the firm) and keep in touch. Senior jobs also gives you some management experience you can discuss in those job interviews. When you are ready to leave, you'll be amazed by how many doors that big 5 name on your resume opens. Many end up working for their clients, so keep that in mind if you have any choice in your assignments. Good luck.
