To belabor the obvious, getting a job (especially in times like these) consists of showing an ability to add value to a specific employer.
General phrases like '5 years in a marketing firm' and '3 years consulting' don't do much. What did you do in marketing and consulting, and what is your target market or company? If you can show them added value they will hire you sooner or later.
