In Reply To: This also depends on the program. For example, I went to Carnegie Mellon. The school is only ranked in the low or upper teens (depending on who did the ranking). However I was in the engineering school which is always ranked in the top 5. In fact Comp Sci has been #1 for years - ahead of MIT and Stanford. What I found was that consultants who have a tech background respect my education and value my skills. HR people who only know the overall school give me a really hard time. One woman told me we only interview from top universities. So the school alone is not that important. I will take a Electrical Engineer from a school like University of Illinois over a English major from Harvard ANYDAY.
Message: One would have to be a grade-A moron to not consider CMU's comp sci program among the best in the world!
