Topic Name: Declining an offer that you already accepted.
Message Name: I can't tell you what a bad idea that is...

In Reply To: Actually, technically, the offer, if you accepted, is an enforceable binding contract, but there's practically no chance that they will enforce it in court. I know people who have reneged on offers to accept better positions. All it does is it looks bad on your school, and your career office will be pissed at you. It burns some bridges with the firm you reneged with, but generally, I don't think it's that bad unless word somehow gets around.
Message: I strongly disagree with the previous posting. There may be no official, physical black list. But the mgt consulting world (and investment banking world) is incredibly small. The chance of this move going undiscovered is NOT insignificant. You may not understand what a big deal what you're suggesting is. When that occurs here at CBS, the head of recruiting usually calls a meeting to speak with the Dean of the school and the head people in the Career Office. If a student does this in his/her first year, they are prohibited from ever using Career Services in any way. Moreover, you may want to consider the message this might say to your potential new employer. It is considered quite an ethical breach -- do you want that stain on your history?
