It's a long shot, but I agree that you should try again. It's just an anecdote but that's how I got my current job, after being laid off from a .com less than a year out of school. The company I declined didn't have any openings but the recruiter remembered me positively and led me to another recruiter at a company in town that DID have openings. I got lucky, for sure, but good HR people know that it's in thier best interests to help good candidates, even if not for thier own company... Plus I've found that people are much more understanding about layoffs than I ever thought they would be. When it first happened I was embarrassed. I went to a top-20 school, did the internships, double major, blah blah blah. How did I get laid off? But the truth is, it isn't personal, and though I'm sure it'll sound cheezy and hackneyed when you read this: I'm better off. I learned a LOT from that experience, espically after my "hot shot" beginning. Sucked at the time though.
Good luck! |

This is generally good advice. Revive old contacts, try new headhunters, search out bulletin boards at local colleges and universities.
I landed my first real job off of a college bulletin board, after almost scoring on another bulletin board. That was an amazing experience. I put in my resume about two weeks before I was due to go home (after visiting a friend for a month). Got a call the day before I was to leave. They had me 6th out of 6 resumes they had weeded out of the pile, but wanted to talk. So they arranged to do a phone interview long distance. I talked with the guy for 3 hours that night and 2 hours the next, and almost got hired over someone wioth two years experience (I had nothing but brains and enthusiasm). Told me they thought they might be making a mistake....
That was an extraordinary shot in the arm. I went on to land a job (in the middle of a lousy economy) two months later, by offering to do a small project on my own time to prove my bona-fides. When you're in a pile of 6 you need to work out how to stand out from the pile. It ain't random.....
Good luck.....
