. . . but you can have an IT strategy and use IT strategically (as opposed to just using it as a tactical tool).
Also, no strategy is complete without an IT vision. |

An example of IT strategy consulting is Accenture's SITE practice, part of the firm's Strategy and Business Engineering practice. The strategy consulting sphere of the MC industry is a highly competitive one. Accenture is a recognized market leader in this sphere. The most recent Global Awareness Tracking Study shows only McKinsey ahead of Accenture in this sphere and no other firm ahead of Accenture in the technology consulting sphere.
The firm's leadership in these two spheres come together in SITE.
SITE (Strategic IT Effectiveness) helps clients understand the strategic role of information technology, interpreting technology for business leaders and framing information technology investments in terms of value creation. Among other things, SITE helps clients achieve competitive advantage by leveraging new technologies as a strategic tool, not just as a tactical tool. It helps firms reshape themselves through new business models, achieve new efficiencies of operations and take advantage of new opportunities made possible by technology. All of this is done within the context of the organization's corporate strategy.
If you are interested in working in IT strategy, this is an excellent example of what kind of work is being done.
Accenture is the leader in this sphere, but is by no means the only firm doing it. It can be an interesting and challenging area of management consulting.
