In Reply To: By the way where did you get your MBA? I spoke to a friend that works at Anderson Consulting and he had mentioned Oracle as the way to go but said to get the Oracle DBA cert... not the Developer designation. He also echoed your advice about not pursuing the MCSE. How did you get involved in ecommerce without programming? And, can I avoid the programming side bec. I'm not a strong programmer? If you didn't program at all how did you get involved in ecommerce? Was it due to the fact you had an MBA from a top 25 school? Thanks Lou
Message: I got my MBA and MS degrees from U of MD b-school, you could call that a top a top 25 (BW and US News had us there)... that is what got me involved in e-commerce. I did spend a year as an analyst on a various systems projects just after graduation then I landed in my current gig. The business knolwedge is just as valuable as the technical side of it. If programming is not your thing, then you will have to develop business expertise, that is the bottom line. I've aalways tried to show JUST ENOUGH tech skill to sell myself, but I never claim to be technical. On job interviews, I always stated that I had a robust understanding of technical architecture and such, but that I am primarily a business analyst! My tech skills are very broad, but very shallow. As far as tech skills, the Oracle DBA cert pays better, but in my opinion it is more important to know how to build applications... I am in the minority when I discuss this issue with most people, but it is because they side with the money. Admin is incredibly boring! It is an easier job over the long run though... Either cert won't hurt, but the DBA has very little to do with understanding process, development does.
