The only significant cutbacks in hiring are at the entry-level positions, so unless you are right out of college, there is no reason not to apply for a position with the firm. Even within campus-hires and entry-level (under 3 years experience) positions, there are still a few areas, primarily in the technology practice, where there are still some openings. I think this is Detroit and Northern Calif.
As far as layoffs or existing offers being rescinded are concerned, there are no current plans to do this, despite what rumors you may have heard on message boards.

In addition to Detroit and Northern California, there are some openings in the Philly/Wilmington Area, too (according to a firm-wide email from Forehand).
