I studied a really 'non-traditional' major in school (graduated with high honors from UCB in 2000) but have had the hardest time breaking into consulting. I minored in business though.
I got to final round with McK, Monitor, Accenture, but no offers. That was regrettable.
So I then worked a year in software.
Now the market is even tighter. Arggghh... I love business problem solving and research, and feel I would *really enjoy* working at a strat firm ideally, though I'd go for almost anything by now.
Trouble is, I can't get interviews now (despite calling my contacts from last year).
Does anyone have any advice on how to break in to consulting (eg: search firms, search strategies, etc.?)
Thanks in advance!

Yes, those are certainly the top firms. You should know that the very top firms, such as the ones you mentioned, as well as most of the others have slowed down hiring at the entry-levels. Some have even frozen hiring for the rest of 2001 (again, entry-level only).
So it may not be so much a reflection on you as much as a reflection on the economy. In addition, former employees from also ran firms, such as FirstMarch and Razorfish (these are specialty firms, by the way, with limited offerings) are now looking for work and will be knocking on the same doors as you.
You might consider going back to school for your MBA. With high honors from UCB you might get into a top 10, certainly a top 20, if your GMATs are OK.
Don't give up hope.
