Looking over all of the consultancy vault pages it looks very much like there is a general loss of business, cutting of staff and reduction in hiring across the board.
Could anyone tell me to what extent this is a slump in the industry (or just Vault melodrama) and how the picture is likely to look for getting hired over the next few years?

As someone recently laid off from a consulting firm, I can tell you that what you've read is not just Vault melodrama. I think things will pick up by next winter.
