In Reply To: Hi, I have been checking out the Mars and Co section of Vault.com. It seems as though the firm has a good reputation, but the message boards are full of nasty posts. Does anyone have a realistic view of the company - type of work, clients - are interactions between employees good - how is the company perceived by the industry? Thanks a lot
Message: The bright side of the moon: Mars and Co does have a great reputation among large traditional firms, and is recognized by its consulting peers. Having worked before at Mars and now, other consulting firms, I can tell you this firm has much more integrity than most other consulting firms - as far as honesty in its results and its expensing policy [compared to the ridiculous almost fraudulent expense policies of other firms (down side, they are cheap)] Mars is not an innovative firm at all, but its approach is unique and very powerful for certain industries and types of strategy projects. They do not take as many short cuts as other firms. The Dark side of the moon: The reason it gets trashed at the Vault is clear. The firm has a severe hazing policy. College grads can expect 2 years of mind numbing hell and lack of respect; those entering at the post MBA/post Phd will be treating like they never worked before and face 6 months to a year of drudgery. During the "new economy" era, why would anyone put up with this unless they are stupid or have no self esteem or choices. And these are the people that post. Add the fact that Mars consults for very old economy firms, you can see how unpopular it must be during the "new economy" era. The upside is that if you can take the initial abuse, your responsible increases, and the job becomes really fun. You get a very nice salary, less travel than other firms, and most importantly, the stress and pressure get lighter as you rise up, whereas at competing firms the stress level increases with promotions. Its not a bad deal for some people. And given the current environment, the deal is getting sweeter.
