In Reply To: if anything, i think it's the opposite. when you've worked for a few years and decide to switch jobs, coming from an ivy league school will help you more. everyone knows where you go for your first job is a crapshoot and all the ivy kids are punk-asses at their first jobs anyway, but quickly that ivy league education becomes more valuable for two reasons: - the superior education from an ivy itself has made you well prepared for change, challenges and success - people will always want ivy leaguers, are you telling me a marquee company doesn't think that taking a state schooler over an ivy leaguer will marr their reputation? some ivy league consultants are for show, most actually got there because they're better equipped for better jobs.
Message: When you look for a second job who would you want more. An Ivy league student coming from HP consulting who has not been promoted, or do you want a non-Ivy league graduate who was with a Big 5 firm and was promoted (consultant/senior consultant). If you pick the first one I hope to never work for your firm. The big consulting firms look at your school when they are hiring you right out of school. When they are looking for experienced hires they are looking where you worked before and signs of success at your former employer (i.e., increased management opportunities, high performance, etc.) If you think differently you are not in consulting or you have no clue about your surroundings. To me the best education you can get is by going to one of the country's best SMALL liberal arts schools. You have a better chance of maturing and better real life experiences.
