I am a supply chain management consultant with a Big 5 consulting firm in Australia. I'm looking for a change in location to the US. Since it looks impossible to be able to transfer within my own firm to the US, I have been considering applying to some of the US Big 5 / Strategy firms. I could adopt one of 4 approaches :
1. Send in my resume through someone who works in the company (though they might be in a different area / location)
2. Apply directly through the web site / internet
3. Send a hard copy of my resume by post and follow up by phone
4. Contact a headhunter who can help.
Any advice on your experiences on which approach works best would be much appreciated. In case I do not have a contact, what is the best alternative?
My target companies include : AT Kearney, Accenture, CGE&Y, Kurt Salmon
Cheers

Right now is a tough time with all the layoffs going on. My advice is to hire a high powered headhunter. After all, you are asking someone else to hire you to do what you do best. The other reason is because many firms (especially Big 5er's) have firms on retainer to search out top talent. I would start with employer paid executive search firms and then try a paid by employee type. You can always negotiate your comp plan to include a bonus to cover the cost of the fee.
Just my humble opinion.
