I was in the midst of writing my dissertation in economics at a top University when I decided that I needed to make a career change, because I did not relish a future of writing research papers for low pay.
I have just started my job search and am looking to work in San Francisco New York ot Toronto.
I am a Phi Beta Kappa graduate from Wharton Undergrad, with work experience at the Federal Reserve and an investment management company.
I believce my resume suggests strong analytical skills, initiative, but is a probably a little weak onthe teamwork/leadership area.
I am looking for advice on a few points. All semi-constructive comments appreciated.
Do I have a crack at getting hired at a big strategy firm, or should I aim a little lower.
What strategies can I employ to get first round interviews given that I have limited access to the on-campus process.
Any thoughts on my employability in general?
I have just started my job-hunt but I am geting the feeeling that companies like Bain and BCG are only looking for type A's that grew up wanting to be consultants. How are non-traditional candidates perceived at the various firms.
Finally, any thoughts about firms like Mitchell Madison and Oliver Wyman.

The Human Capital Strategy Group at Mercer Consulting Group (William M. Mercer) hires almost exclusively Ph.D. Economists and I/O Psychologists.
Currently this group is only in NYC and Washington offices. It is a research based consultancy that has been around for about six years. It supports William M. Mercer and to a lesser degree Mercer Management Consulting doing work on people practices effecting value added productivity. Warning - you may find it closer to Academe than consulting.
