In Reply To: Okay guys. I went to Bucknell..nationally ranked 25 by (US NEWS...). I have a sister in the IVY's now so I often compare and contrast the students at both types of U's. My opinion-People have to take the top 25 liberal schools a bit more seriously than they do. I am not talking about the Amhersts, Swathmores, Williams etc, etc. I am talking about schools like Colgate, Bucknell, Vassar etc. etc. In one of my Finance classes as a senior at BU, I asked the proffessor (who used to be an exec at Goldman-he attended both Dartmouth and Columbia) what is the real difference between the IVY's and a school like mine? He said that the top 1/3(in intelligence) of the class at any of the 25/30 liberal arts schools can compete with the IVY student without any problems. The difference lies in when you compare the average liberal art student with the avg Ivy student. Advantage-IVY. The same could probably be said for state school vs IVY. As for getting an education-the liberal arts schools have small classes that are very interactive and the prof knows the name of every student, thus creating an exceptional learning atmosphere...just as good if not better than the ones at IVY's. But, not as many of the top companies come to the Lib Arts Schools ranked 10-25. Goldman will stop by, but only to hire for it controllers division-not its IB division. Merril May stop by, but only to hire 1 at the most. How do you get a IB or or top MAN CONS job like Bain, MCK etc, ?..hopefully connections got you the summer internship with the firm otherwise it is hard to do it straight up. Regardless of how Corporate America views us, top liberal arts schools produce highly qualified individuals. As for State Schools- don't ever discount UCLA, UNC, UVA , UT, or MICH. They produce talented individuals- ones that can easily compete with the IVY's. Don't assume a student at Princeton is smarter than the one from UCLA. What if the student chose UCLA becuase his parents could not afford Princeton (or schools like Amherst), wanted greater diversity in college , preffered the location or all of the above? Also many these states schools have "Honors Programs" that have individuals just as smart as the IVY's if not smarter. Penn State, whose regular undergrad is a joke compared to the IVY's, has one of the best (if not the best) honors program(1350 to get in). All in all, if you want to succeed you need strong work ethic, intelligence, and people skills. A combination of these three will get you far regardless of which three institution you attended.

DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU LEARN!! As for getting an education-the liberal arts schools have small classes that are very interactive and the prof knows the name of every student, thus creating an exceptional learning atmosphere... HAND HOLDING. AT IVY'S YOU'RE ENCOURAGED TO LEARN BY TAKING ON YOUR OWN POINT OF VIEW, THEY ENCOURAGE YOU TO BE INDEPENDENT AND FREE THINKING NOT SIT AROUND SHARE YOUR FEELINGS LIKE YOU'RE STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL How do you get a IB or or top MAN CONS job like Bain, MCK etc, ? GO TO AN IVY AND GET A GOOD EDUCATION ..hopefully connections got you the summer internship with the firm otherwise it is hard to do it straight up. THEN HE WAS STUPID, I WENT TO IVY LEAGUE SCHOOL 100% THROUGH LOANS AND WORKING THREE JOBS, DON;T TELL ME IT'S NOT POSSIBLE. BECAUSE I KNOW IT IS, THESE ARE EXCUSES Also many these states schools have "Honors Programs" that have individuals just as smart as the IVY's if not smarter. HONORS? SO IT'S LIKE, HONORS REMEDIAL? PENN STATE WISH THEY WERE UPENN All in all, if you want to succeed you need strong work ethic, intelligence, and people skills. A combination of these three will get you far regardless of which three institution you attended WHAT SCHOOL YOU ATTEND TOTALLY HAS A BEARING ON HOW SUCCESSFUL YOU WILL BE, IT'S NOT ONLY IN THE NAME, BUT THE KIND OF EDUCAITON YOU HAD THERE. AT IVY'S YOU ARE ENCOURAGED TO BE FIERCELY INDEPENDENT AND STRONG-MINDED. IT'S SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST. BUT IT IS ALSO A PLACE WHERE YOU CAN EXPLORE JUST ABOUT ANYTHING AND SUCCEED BC THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE THERE UNDERSTAND SOONER OR LATER THAT THEY HAVE BEEN GRACED WITH AN UNBELIEVABLE OPPORTUNITY.
