In Reply To: Yes, having an Ivy League school on your resume will impress employers moreso than almost all other schools with the exception of Stanford types and some stud international schools. It matter even moreso on the east coast where the best companies are often run and managed by Ivy Leaguers. For those who think it's better to go to a Penn State and get a 4.0 or than to go to a Penn and get a 3.2, keep dreaming. Ivy's on the whole are a way better guarantee of getting your foot in the door. Of course there are exceptions for any brilliant person, but remember, exceptions do not negate the stereotype. Anybody can catch up if there smart enough, but an Ivy diploma certainly gets you greater access earlier on in your career. Yes, it's deserved. People from state schools hate to admit it, but too damn bad. they have a reputation for a reason, and it's because they crank out smarter and more successful folks in greater numbers than other universities.
Message: Perhaps I was lucky. Perhaps the HR rep misread my resume. Perhaps I actually earned it. Regardless, I have found one of the most satisfying aspects of professional life is to have graduated from 'lowly' Penn State and, at a top consulting firm, to continually out perform my arrogant and, all to often, ignorant colleagues that boast Ivy educations on their resumes. From the other side of the state/ivy discussion, the name of your school is simply that, a name. Please do not feel sorry for those of us that did not graduate from you esteemed halls of our modern caste system, we will do just fine. Finally, enjoy the protection receive from your dishonest compatriots that give away jobs that are not deserved, my experience tells me that many of you need it.
