AMS is a middle of the road company, with equal project successes and failures. It is well liked among recruits and college hires because its culture is so liberal, and it offers flexible hours and partner benefits.
AMS doesn't offer a great name (like an Andersen) on the resume, so your career there is your own, make it or break it. There is a tremendous dearth of business integrity, professionalism and training opportunities. Often, females are stiffed on high-profile work assignments and respect in general. I never saw evidence of their oft-boasted ratings by Working Mother magazine as a 'great place to work for women/mothers.' In fact, I worked until midnight with mothers of school-aged children many times, and attended company functions where spouses and significant others were not invited, due to a tight party budget. WHAT???
Many employees regret their decisions to go with AMS over other more reputable consulting firms. The big 5 are reputable for a reason. The "Outside the Box" way only works when you back it up with training, supportive management, and professionalism. The organization is supposed to be flat, but jumping through hierarchical ego hoops is standard practice. Dishonesty abounds from one level of management to another, and on remote project sites, the treatment you receive from 25ish managers borders on sexual harassment.
Because you asked for a balanced perspective, the perks are: high compensation if you fit their mold - intelligent, good GPA from great undergrad school, ambitious, hard-nosed; great benefits-3 weeks vacation, 1 week sick leave, 401K, disability, health, dental, and life insurance. Excellent travel benefits; and, occasionally, you think you're in college again.
