I have a Masters in chemical engineering and one+ year experience in environmental consulting. I am now looking to get into management consulting, but most of the recruiters I've talked to have told me they are, by no means, hiring right now.
Am I just looking at the wrong firms or is no one hiring right now? Or perhaps no one is hiring advanced degree holders (engineers)? (I've contacted places like McKinsey and Bain as well as Big 5--Accenture and heard similar things).

General management consulting and IT consulting are experiencing a slump. You say you're already doing 'environmental consulting.' What's your motivation for switching to more general management consulting? More importantly, what do you feel you offer?
I think consulting companies at all levels are nervous and unsure about the direction the market's taking. A decade ago it was 're-engineering.' In the last three years it was 'internet or e-strategy.' Now they're not sure what the next strategic initiative will be.
