In Reply To: Although I do not feel undervalued and thoroughly enjoy working at the small boutique consulting firm I am currently at, hearing that consultants coming out of school now are making more than I am makes me feel highly underpaid. I've been a consultant for 1 1/2 years since I graduated from undergrad and currently make 55K. I live well and recognize money isn't everything. But I've decided to negotiate my salary. I'd like to know if anyone has any advice? My plan is to basically say that I feel like I am under-market value compared to the value I add to the firm. I don't want to sound greedy, but it's hard for me to swallow that 21 year olds with no consulting experience are making 10-20K more than I am. Any suggestions? Thanks!!!
Message: True that in consulting one will be making less than the new graduates (Bachelors or MBAs). However, if you decide to ask for a raise, please make sure you understand how the compensation model of your firm works. You must understand what is your net worth and how that net worth is calculated. If you say that you are adding value, is that not whay you were expected to do? if you have added value above and beyond your level, then measure it in terms of its worth...did you sell work? did you complete a project under budget? WHAT IS YOUR VALUE ABOVE AND BEYOND WHAT YOU ARE EXPECTED TO DO? if you have no measurable value, then you dont deserve a raise...best thing...quit and join another firm...you will make much more...by the way there is no way you can negotiate a higher salary...consulting firms dont let you do it.
