In Reply To: legal implications, not really ethical implications. huge, and it should bother you that you do not have any. I am not a goody goody type, but reneging is welching, its wrong, plain and simple. And it probably WILL come back to you. there are 6 billion people in the world, and 270 million in the US, but the number of people who can get into a top consulting firm is very small, and more tightknit than you think. There is probably a better than 50/50 shot that a reneg will come to haunt you some point in the future, and a good chance you will not be even aware of how it will hurt you (people are quiet, often) Treat everyone with respect, and you will lose out in the short run, but in the long run, in a small world (with a repeating prisoner dilemma), honesty is a better policy, and you will sleep better at night (or you should)
Message: Hey, to the kid wondering if he/she should keep interviewing after signing: First of all, with the current market there are some major hiring freezes going on. Second of all, a large % of analysts at bulge bracket I-banks and business consultants in the top 5 did not get hired right out of school nor during traditional Fall recruiting season - for headcount, timing (like in your case, exploding offers), or no openings reasons. They reapplied, interviewed at 7am, got a better offer, and dropped their 'other jobs' in 6 months flat. Keep track of who you meet & interview with. If they say they started here - and you know that was a 2 year contract - yet they are currently working over there after 6 months, that tells you something. Reneging happens more than you think. Know your self-worth and don't sell out.
