In Reply To: I'm a first year at Fuqua considering a career in management consulting. During the recrruiting season, I have consistently noticed that the number one concern of my classmates is lifestyle. More and more students are members of dual-career familes and are at the age when they are making plans for children. They welcome the challenge of consulting, but don't understand why that must come with 4 days of travel per week. The number of grads willing to make this sacrifice is dropping rapidly. I guarantee, that unless consulting firms change their travel policies, they will be hard pressed to find willing candidates.
Message: MBA's today want options. We want to see as many company's lay their cards on the table as possible. We will listen intently to the company line, try to determine if the speaker is honest, ask questions of employees and former interns, research the company on the web, attempt to estimate the pay packages, and make a decision. An MBA today wants real money, a comfortable lifestyle, an interesting job that has either substantial opportunities for promotions or cash windfalls. There are not many jobs that offer all of the above. Consulting and I-Banking are the two most popular careers by far at the top 10 schools. Why? Not because grads want a balanced lifestyle (far from it). Interesting career opportunities, prestige, and money go a long way with the top MBA's. So, I must respectfully disagree with my Fuqua colleague and state that as long as consulting offers high pay and interesting work, there will be a glut of consultant-wanna-be's. Also note that MBA's from different schools will have different desires and expectations from employers.
