how exactly does INSEAD check your language profiency? via interview i assume? and just how much more respected is INSEAD than Harv/Stanford/Wharton? |

You have to pass tests given by accredited agencies (e.g. Goethe Institut for German) or have sufficient coursework. Fluency in English is required (TOEFL), as is conversational ability in one another language before entry and in a third language before graduation.
As for rankings, INSEAD is and has always been #1 in Europe; vis-a-vis the US schools, it is equivalent to top 10, but not on par with HBS or Stanford.
However, INSEAD has a different value proposition than HBS. While HBS has only 20-30% internationals, INSEAD is entirely international with no single nation making up more than 10% of the students and with a far more diverse set of professors.
If you want to work outside the US, INSEAD offers a much more compelling value: a broader international network, a less US-biased education, and an unparalleled opportunity to learn how to work closely with very diverse peers. If you want to work specifically within Europe, a better network cannot be found.
