Honesty is the best policy, yadda, yadda....
True, I like being honest, I like holding my head high, and all of that. I do.
But once checks are cut, they're cut. Are you going to make the guy cancel the checks and admit his negligence or fraud? No, you take the checks, and being honest, you ask that he not give you any more.
After that point, you know who your friends are. The guy likes you, and is willing to put his neck out for you. Continuing the same analogy, don't chop his head off.
If confronted, say you just cashed whatever checks came, you thought nothing of it, and you continued on with your very VERY busy life. You assumed that the company had not made a mistake, and you were going to look into it when you had a chance.
BUT YOU DO NOT RAT OUT THIS GUY. It raises suspicions about you (why would he do this for you & risk his career unless you're shady, too?) AND you make an enemy out of this dude.
Enemies suck. Avoid them.
Good luck, enjoy the cash, and remember that careers involve political savy as much as ability and drive.
