In Reply To: As an undergrad that hasnt committed to any consulting firm yet, let me just say that all of the self righteous postings on the various company consulting boards about which firm is best is pretty funny. Think about this for a second. Notice the allegiance to a firm with hundreds or thousands of people that you never have and never will meet as well as the vicious competitiveness that goes along with it. a) My gut tells me that you can not categorize the cultures of multinational firms this way and each office has a little bit different of a feel depending on the recruiters and partners. b) overall, i bet that most of the top firms are pretty much the same and those that like to brag are just trying to prove their own individuality. maybe the need to differentiate ones giant firm and how the person is so cool because the firm is "the best" is really based on low self esteem and the realization that the job isnt that unique. I bet that most of the people in the top firms are like most of the people in the ivy league school i attended...egomaniacs with big mouths and small balls. Whether one has a cushy consulting job or a very tiring one, I really do not have a profound level or respect for the consultantcy field. There simply is not enough risk involved. I have more respect for those that decide to leave the surfdom of corporate america or consulting in order to take a chance and become an entreprenuer, risking it all to follow a vision. I will go into consulting but will not dedicate the rest of my life to helping grow the worlds corporation population. I will go to one of these arrogant top consuling firms for several reasons. I think the experience will be interesting, educational and I also need to get a strong base so I can have the necessary capital and connections to leave and try to make something big happen...Something that will hopefully change society for the better. But when I am a consultant I wont fool myself into thinking that I am gods gift to the world.
Message: Some firms, too. To be proud of your firm implies no lack of self esteem. Example: It's hard to get into McK. If you get in, be proud. You've earned it. More so than someone who is proud of his country by simply being born. I agree that trying to figure out which firm is best( or #2, or #5, or whatever) is an academic excersize, and different measures may yield different results. Bottom line: Everyone must find a career/firm/job/salary that is rewarding enough in the ways important enough to them. Being in a "#1 firm" and being miserable is just dumb. But hey, hand a dude 6 figures plus to do work he loves in a place he loves and that he honestly believes is the best place to work.... Then that's a happy dude. And that dude won't give 2 shits what you or anyone else has to say about the firm unless it affects the work he does or the rewards he receives.
