In Reply To: I recently graduated from a very decent east-coast school where I got very decent grades in a liberal arts major. During Fall recruitment, I interviewed with a number of different firms--one in consulting, the others in I-banking. I made it to the 3rd round interview (office visit) with Andersen (sorry, Accenture) and was eventually rejected. I feel as though I am at a distinct disadvantage in competing for consulting jobs because I lack the technical skills sought after by most firms. I am still very interested in consulting, but I feel so discouraged--if I couldn't get hired by Andersen, do I have any chance at all at being hired in the Spring by other consulting firms?
Message: you're ok kid. the recruiting process done at most schools is very arbitrary. if you are seriously interested in consulting, don;t limit yourself to big firms where they are dealing with so many recruits at once that they often let go of even good candidates. also, get some feedback from people you interviewed with. ask them why you were dumped. maybe you are doing soemthing perpetually wrong in your last rounds. finally, consider the timing of your job search. the economy is bad if you haven't noticed. hiring freezes are amuck. firms may still be "hiring" but it's still a tough time to be looking to be hired in teh tech industry.
