A) Can people like that get in to boutiques?
I would not assume that just because it is a boutique that standards are lower than those of the major firms. I was at a BCG spinoff and found that there was a lot of overlap between our hire decisions and those of BCG/McKinsey/Bain. While we USUALLY did not win out over them, we regularly beat out Big 6 consulting firms and other "non-elite" consulting firms. We really were not "sweeping up" whatever was left after the Big 3 made their decisions. Of course, I'm a bit biased, but we only hired 1 in 30 (or so) that made it to the interview process (largely at top-tier schools).
B) Do the big 3 hire boutiquers?
Yes, although I know few boutiquers who attempted to return to consulting. Many found other "greener pasteurs" (i.e. start-ups, banking, etc.).
C) Are boutiquers at a disadvantage when going for the big 3 jobs?
I don't think so, as long as their is demonstrable evidence that the work was similar. I had invitations to interview at all the major shops -- I don't think that was a fluke. |

You said that you worked for a BCG spinoff. I think I know the one you mean and I'm considering joining (entry level), but the message board specific to that company is full of rather bitter people. Can you describe how you found the place? Whether you'd go back etc.?
