Although I respect all non-compete agreements, they can not restrict you from finding employment in your field. If you only know how to be a consultant in a specific field it is unlikely that any court will force you to do a year at McDonalds before you can return to the conslting firm.
The more specific the contract is the more likely it is to be upheld in court. -- i.e. you can not work for the following clients: 1, 2, and 3, or work in the following states as a consultant in the following field.
If your contract is a complete ban on you performing consulting services for a year I belive it is a worthless non-compete agreements.
It would call an employment attorney and have him/her review your contract.
