Can anyone in the strategy consulting field offer advice to a University of Florida Finance undergrad with a 3.5 GPA currently interning with MSDW in Jacksonville Florida. I hope to enter MSDW's analyst program, or an equivelant at another firm with the eventual hope of returning to a top ten school for my MBA. I've been reading about consulting but would love additional advice regarding the most efficient progression of steps I should take to get from my current position to my future career ? Am I being overly optimistic given the lack of prestige my undergraduate program carries. I appreciate your candid responses.
Thanks. |

I had a similar history. I went to a good, but not great, undergraduate institution and had an excellent GPA. I worked for a good strategy boutique out of undergrad, then went to Columbia. Once I got here, it was relatively easy to break into the strategy consulting arena. In fact, during my second year, I had many unsolicited invitations to interview from all the "big boys" (e.g. McKinsey, Booz, etc.).
My advice would be to get a good, "brand name" job under your belt. The analyst program certainly seems like a good start. Head back to a "Top 10" school (HBS, Wharton, and Stanford are the best for strat consulting, but you can also do well at UC, MIT, Columbia, NW, Tuck, Darden, etc.). You can easily make the jump from there (just make sure you practice your case interviews).
Best of luck!
