One of the previous posters distinguished between two career paths: Research/teaching is for PhDs and "hands-on" work for MBAs. IMHO, it is not so easy to categorize in this way. I am about to finish my PhD in Informatics (however, on process improvement in the pharma-industry, which is a more business oriented topic) shortly and during my time as a PhD-student, I have worked as a project manager with a consulting firm and managed a research group at an institute.
I admit that these additional activities have delayed the completition of the thesis with about 2 years (I started 1994 and a Swedish PhD program is 4 years), but otherwise it has been a very good experience to combine research and practice and the cross-fertilization is evident.
So, even if you are interested in a business career, a PhD can be the right degree if you do your research in a business relevant area.
