In Reply To: I am a first time poster after reading several boards for several weeks now. All these "ranking" debates make me want to vomit. I think what each and every insecure "school A is better than school B" poster is really saying is, "please re-assure me that my school will automatically get me a BB or McKinsey job." It almost appears that inadequate applicants attempt to snow recruiters based on the ranking of their school (from which they attained a random and unjustified acceptance). I have completed 6 months of pretty thorough research into b-schools which has included speaking directly with BB recruiters, MD's, and unbiased third parties (obviously I'm interested in IB). Based on this research I applied to 8 schools (including European) and was lucky enough to be accepted by 5. I won't say which school I am going to for fear of my post being labeled biased (but I will say that I wasn't accepted by Harvard or Stanford.) My point is this; there is so little differentiation in the quality of Top 10 schools or job prospects from Top 10 schools to make the "which school to attend" decision completely inconsequential save the personal fit and lifestyle criteria. (When I say Top 10 I refer to FT's Top 10 for reference purposes only. I in no way support the ranking itself). As a qualified applicant, simply attending a school ranked 5 over school ranked 7 does not guarantee desired employment. To suggest otherwise is laughable. I have had lengthy discussions with corporate recruiters and MD's (my uncle is a BB MD) who have confirmed this. One must understand the recruiting business fully to appreciate these comments. Recruiters are constrained by budgets and have to devote recruiting resources to places where they will get the best bang for their bucks. It should come as no shock to hear that top employers recuit at, for example, only 7 of the Top 10 schools. Having said this, everyone should understand that recruiters simply define the initial cut of applicants for the MD's and partners to decide on who to hire. If one can bypass the recruiters, then that is a tremendous advantage and MD's/partners have this ability. Therefore, if an employer does not recruit at your school, then your job as a student simply becomes harder as you'll have to network your way into that firm. This is where the alumni base (which typically characterizes a Top 10 school) becomes valuable. No doors are closed between Top 10 schools, rather some may require prying to open (not a big deal). The b-schools business is like a vicious circle. Schools attract top students based on curriculum and job prospects. In turn, recruiters go to schools based on caliber of students, and faculty go to schools based on reputation and research facilities (and $ of course). It's a catch 22 for a school to improve in the rankings. FT's Top 10 (and 15 for that fact) all qualify as quality schools that will allow a capable student to attain their goals via recruiting or alumni or other. The only difference is ease of the job search. To suggest that any one school guarantees employment over another is asinine. To all "school A over school B" posters: Go where you fit in the best and will have the best lifestyle. Get your self reassurances from your parents. Finally, stop spewing misinformed self serving propaganda on anonymous message boards. Over and out.
Message: your point is correct...i agree with you..i think most of these folks are so caught up in going to harvard and getting their job package 6 months from grad, they forget that a) just because you grad from harvard doesnt mean all of your work is over B) and how some of you guys belittle those that do not want to walk in your path....... the funny thing is this, if us news and reports...comes out tomorrow with a no name school in the top 10 as a joke....or a misprint...its funny how people would apply to that school just because its listed in the top 10... and also..the rankings... thats simply to sell magazines...i am sure us news sells more issues of the ranking book then any other publication they have each year..... i think people need to really think about what they say....... people get a clue you are no better just because someone decides to go to univ of mich..instead of harvard............. have you ever wondered why the same school just rotate in the rankings.... have you ever considered... the fact that the only thing us news and reports do is.... send out every accredited school a form...... have them fill it out..of course a majority of the deans will put harvard..or the school they attended.... have you ever considered the fact that us news and reports..dont even look at the schools' program... its all about name brand people..nothing more nothing less......its like a lexus..of course its a great car...but guess what... its made by toyota...now is really any better than a camry...... do the math
