I just decided on schools. Like you, I was looking into startups and VCs. I narrowed it down to Stanford and MIT because those were the schools that exceled at both. I am at McKinsey as a business analyst. Here are my rationale for each school:
Sloan:
We recently did a study among our target recruiting schools of which Kellogg is one. Sloan actually came out as one of the most successful in placing students that make directors. We have stepped up our recruiting there, and I have heard that we made over 20 full time offers to a class of 350.
The school also has good connections to the VC community. Some analysts and associates who went to the valley have told me that MIT and stanford alums are everywhere and those names count heavily.
Also, MIT and Stanford business schools have good ties with the engineering schools, which is good for aspiring entrepreneurs. This also attracts VCs.
I've talked to several VCs and a substantial number of them such as Battery Ventures and even Kleiner have taken MBAs from MIT. They usually only take 1-2 associates if any.
Kellogg:
Good in the MC community. YOu can't go wrong! I'm sure they are one of the core recruiting targets for BCG,BAH, Bain and whoever else you are interested in. They are a good recruiting target for us.
Within startups, there a lot of marketing positions at dot coms available, but no VCs recruit there... at least not any of the major ones.
I didn't consider it because it is not as strong as stanford and mit in terms of VC work and startups. If you are leaning toward MC, you can't go wrong with NW though. If not, I'll probably see you at MIT next year. |

Thanks Anonymous for sharing your research. It was very insightful and corresponded with the research that I had done. I was leaning MIT but have come round to the view that MIT is the best choice. Now, between MIT and HArvard, which one? This one is a struggle. I'm leaning MIT.
All things considered, I most likely will see you this fall at MIT.
Thanks and good luck on your decision!
