Don't fool yourself! The top schools want to see excellent work experience AND a high GMAT score!!! You don't want the GMAT to be an issue in your application. The competition to get into the top schools is so fierce that you don't want any "maybes" in your application.
I had to go through the application process twice and wait one more year because I thought that my very strong and unusual work experience would compensate for my low 600s GMAT score. I was rejected by all the schools I applied to. After that I took a prep course, beefed up my GMAT score to the high 600s, reapplied, and will be attending a top 5 school this fall. It has really paid off.
My advice remains the same: do whatever you can to increase your score to the high 600s. That, coupled with your unusual background, will significantly increase your chances of getting into the program of your choice.

I don't know about taking the GMAT again. I might just stick with the 610 and move on. I think you may want to just SERIOUSLY study the application process and focus on having a dynamite application. I posted my strategies on this board to a person who got dinged by all of the schools he/she applied to. It was a fairly recent thread. I got into HBS with a score in the low - low 600s. It was no where near anything in the high 600s. I addressed it in my application and moved on.
Now, you may want to retake the exam. I don't know. So take into consideration everyone's comments...
