In Reply To: What about Wharton? They also have an E-commerce concentration. Isn't Sloan and MIT a bit corky?
Message: I didn't suggest Wharton because I'm not familiar with their program. I'm not sure what you mean by "corky" (perhaps you mean "quirky"?) but MIT Sloan is a top MBA program with a twist - it has a strong technology focus. This translates into a strong presence in the e-commerce, strategic IT, high-tech, and venture capital fields. If you look at placement stats - some of the top recruiters are the top-tier management consulting firms like McKinsey and BCG. If you're into finance don't forget that MIT Sloan has a trading room to try out all those new trading strategies you develop. With that said, I would say that MIT Sloan is an excellent program that provides a good solid MBA general management program with an entrepreneurial slant. It has concentrations in financial engineering and management, e-commerce, strategic IT, strategic management, high-tech marketing, and new product and venture development. So, if you want to say that MIT Sloan is quirky - it is in the sense that it prepares MBA students for management in an environment of rapid technological change - exactly the environment of today. Will MIT Sloan prepare you for the future? Most definitely. Perhaps more so than the outdated business model of Harvard. Although the case study is a great way to learn, you just can't learn finance techniques, quantitative methods, and accounting in a case study format. First you have to have the theory then come the applications. I was not impressed with Harvard. As you can tell, I'm a MIT Sloan fan - and a soon-to-be student. I agree that Wharton is a top program, although I did not consider it in my final list of B-Schools. One reason I did include Wharton in my final list was the size of the classes. Another reason was location. The most important reason I decided against Wharton is that it was not the right "fit" for me. MIT Sloan was the right "fit". Just call me "quirky". In three years, just call me rich! P.S. - Just for the record, my final list was Kellogg, MIT Sloan, Harvard, & Stanford.
