thanks to all who've contributed insights below. i find this board to be much more civil and helpful than some of the other troll-ridden ones out there.
regarding timing of the wharton app, does anyone know if they will even so much as glance at an app b4 the interview is completed? i submitted mid-feb but won't be doing the interview until next week. i'm kind of hoping that they might at least give it a once over to establish an initial impression. i'm also hoping that the mid-feb submission date pushes me up the que so that review commences as soon as the interview is done.
insights/comments anyone?

Yes, I think that the interviewer will have reviewed your application but probably rather quickly. You can count on them having seen your resume.
As far as the trolls on other boards, you'll find they rear an ugly head every once and again, but fortunately we've been able to ignore them away. If they don't get the reaction they want, then they tend to lose interest.
