Hey guys,
Here are some puzzling probability questions I was wondering if anyone could solve.
1. A player sits down at a roulette table with $20. He bets $1 at a time on either red or black. Either bet pays even money and has a probability of 9/19 of winning. What is the probability that the player wins $10 before losing all of his $20?
2. You have an urn with four balls of different colors. Randomly you draw two at a time, then painting the first ball to match the second. What is the expected number of paintings before all balls are the same color?
3. A box contains two coins. One coin is heads on both sides and the other is heads on one side and tails on the other. One coin is selected from the box at random and the face of one side is observed. If the face is heads what is the probability that the other side is heads?
4. Given a coin with probability p of landing on heads after a flip, what is the probability that the number of heads will ever equal the number of tails assuming an infinite number of flips?
Also. I was wondering if anyone could give me some feedback on my chances of getting into NYU Stern.
I got a 680 on my GMAT (48M 37V 6.0AWA) I am taking the test one more time in March becuase I know I can do better on the verbal, I was always scoring in the low 40's on the practice test. I may seem some improvement on the math, but I'll be satisified if I get the same math score again.
I have a 3.75 GPA from Carnegie Mellon, with concentrations in Finance and Information Systems. Held summer internships at Samsung Corp(Seoul, S.Korea), Intel(Chandler, Ariz), and am currently employed(1.5 years) full time at AMS, a technical consultanting firm. I am planning to apply to NYU in the Fall of 2001, I was wondering if anyone could give me feedback as to what my chances might be.
What concerns me most about my credentials is that many web sites such as 800Score.com now report many of their students are being flat out rejected by B-Schools, even though those same students have GMAT's in the 680-720 range and also have GPA's in the 3.4 - 3.7 range. 800Score.com states "That 690 figure is deceptive because that average includes many students accepted for unusual traits (diversity, unusual accomplishment or success, etc..) that allow them to get away with a lower score. If you have none of these types of traits, you probably need to break 720 to have a chance at a top ten school. 800score.com members report that many students with 680-720 GMATs and > 3.4 - 3.7 GPAs (and no "unusual" traits) are getting across-the-board rejections from top-ten schools this year."
So what constitues a person that shows "diversity, unusual accomplishment or success?"
Many thanx for the help and replies!!!
